Bamboo Fabric: Why You Need It

By Bespoke By CBAugust 12, 2021

Bamboo is noted as the fastest growing plant on the planet. Bamboo grows at an average of 2 inches every hour. With over 1,500 species of bamboo worldwide, it is no wonder this eco-crop is having its moment in the limelight.

At Christian Boehm, some of the best-selling cloths are composed of bamboo fibers. Below our custom clothiers break down everything you need to know about the bamboo fabric.

WHAT IS BAMBOO FABRIC

In the textile industry, the term "bamboo fabric" refers to a number of different textiles made from the bamboo plant. Bamboo has been used for thousands of years by different cultures all over the globe.

Historically in Asia, bamboo was originally used for the hand-made products of paper. However, it is only in recent years that the extraction of the bamboo fiber has been perfected to turn the pulp into a usable fiber that is woven in fabric for cloth.

How are Bamboo Fabrics Made

Depending on the fabric the bamboo pulp is being made into, bamboo fabrics can be made in various ways. The majority of cloth is produced by bamboo viscose which refers to the same process as producing rayon. This is the most common type of bamboo cloth that you will find readily available. The process of viscose is incredibly lengthy and involves a good deal of manufacturing refinement.

A simpler, more costly solution is using a spinning technique. This technique gives the fabric a more silky luxurious product. After the bamboo plant is harvested, the leaves and the soft inner pith are crushed, extracting the bamboo cellulose. The crushed fibers are then soaked into a natural enzyme solution. This solution is then washed by hand and spun into yarn that can then be woven into different fabrics.

The result is a silky super soft fabric that can be used for producing more delicate garments like bed sheets, shirts, suits, and more.

BENEFITS OF USING BAMBOO FABRIC

Bamboo fabric are similar in feel to the softness of silk. Since bamboo fabrics are produced without chemicals, they are naturally smoother, making it non-irritating to the skin. Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic, making it an excellent fabric for those who have allergies or have sensitive skin.

Bamboo is antibacterial and anti-fungal due to its bacteriostatic bio-agent called the "Bamboo Kun". This beneficial quality means that the textile will naturally kill bacteria that accumulate on the skin for natural wear, making the wearer feel fresher and odor-free throughout the day.

Unlike any other natural fibers, bamboo is extremely breathable. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is covered in micro-gaps, giving the fabric a high level of moisture absorption and ventilation. It is also anti-static and UV protectant by cutting out nearly 98% of harmful UV.

Bamboo Fabric Benefits Summary:

IS BAMBOO FABRIC SUSTAINABLE?

The plant bamboo is one of the most sustainable crops anywhere in the world. Under the right conditions, bamboo is regarded as being at the top of the list for eco-friendly fabrics. Compared to cotton, bamboo is much less costly to produce and avoids using extensive pesticides in production.

Scientific American reported that "bamboo can be cultivated with little to no fertilizer, pesticides, heavy harvesting machinery or irrigation, and bamboo root systems can protect steep banks from erosion." Because bamboo has such a deep root system, the plant is simply cut down while the soil remains undisturbed for future use. When done sustainably, bamboo does not require large inputs of fertilizer or pesticides to grow.

With any manufacturing, large-scale cultivation and production come with environmental issues. However, buying from a responsible and transparent source can help mitigate some of the risks that come with the pollution of the textile industry.

BAMBOO VS. OTHER PERFORMANCE FABRICS

When comparing bamboo to other warm-weather fabric options, several distinctions emerge. Bamboo offers unique advantages that make it our preferred choice for Miami's climate.

Bamboo vs. Linen: Linen is a classic warm-weather fabric, but it wrinkles extensively and has a rougher texture. Bamboo fabric provides similar breathability but with a silky smooth hand feel and significantly less wrinkling. For professional settings where a crisp appearance matters, bamboo is the superior choice.

Bamboo vs. Cotton: Cotton is ubiquitous but absorbs moisture without wicking it away effectively. Bamboo's micro-gap structure actively pulls moisture away from the skin and evaporates it quickly. Bamboo is also naturally antibacterial, while cotton is not, meaning bamboo garments stay fresher longer between washes.

Bamboo vs. Synthetic Performance Fabrics: Synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics are effective but lack the natural hand feel and breathability of bamboo. Synthetics can trap heat against the skin and often develop odor issues over time despite their wicking properties. Bamboo achieves similar performance naturally, without the environmental concerns associated with synthetic fiber production.

GARMENT TYPES THAT SHOWCASE BAMBOO BEST

Bamboo fabric shines in specific garment categories where its unique properties provide the most benefit:

Custom Dress Shirts: Bamboo dress shirts are our most popular bamboo garment. The silky texture elevates the shirt beyond standard cotton, while the moisture-wicking properties keep you comfortable all day. A bamboo dress shirt in white or light blue is a versatile wardrobe essential that performs exceptionally well in Miami's climate.

Sport Jackets: A bamboo sport jacket offers the structure of a tailored garment with the comfort of a lightweight knit. The natural drape of bamboo fabric creates elegant folds and a refined silhouette that works for both business and social occasions.

Custom Suits: For men who want a suit that performs in warm weather, a bamboo-fabric suit is an outstanding choice. The fabric maintains its shape throughout the day while keeping you significantly cooler than traditional wool options. A bamboo suit in navy or charcoal is a sophisticated addition to any professional wardrobe.

Travel Garments: Bamboo's natural wrinkle resistance makes it ideal for travel. Pack a bamboo shirt or jacket in your carry-on, and it emerges with minimal wrinkling. The antibacterial properties also mean you can wear the garment longer between washes, which is invaluable during extended travel.

CARING FOR BAMBOO GARMENTS

Proper care extends the life and performance of your bamboo garments. While bamboo fabric is durable, following these guidelines ensures your garments look their best for years.

Washing: Most bamboo garments can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with cold water. Use a mild detergent without bleach or fabric softeners, as these can damage the bamboo fibers. For structured garments like jackets and suits, professional dry cleaning is recommended.

Drying: Air drying is ideal for bamboo fabrics. If using a dryer, select a low heat setting to prevent shrinkage. Remove garments promptly to minimize wrinkling. Never dry bamboo fabrics on high heat, as this can damage the fibers and reduce the fabric's natural performance properties.

Ironing: Bamboo fabrics respond well to ironing on a low to medium setting. Use steam for best results. The fabric's natural smoothness means less ironing is typically required compared to cotton or linen.

Storage: Store bamboo shirts on hangers rather than folded to minimize wrinkling. For bamboo suits and jackets, use wide wooden hangers and allow adequate space between garments for airflow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BAMBOO FABRIC

Is bamboo fabric really better than cotton for hot weather?

Yes, particularly in humid climates like Miami. Bamboo's moisture-wicking and antibacterial properties are superior to cotton. While cotton absorbs sweat, bamboo actively pulls moisture away from the skin and evaporates it. This means you stay drier and more comfortable throughout the day, with less odor buildup.

Does bamboo fabric shrink?

Bamboo fabric can shrink if exposed to high heat during washing or drying. Always use cold water for washing and low heat or air drying. Following proper care instructions, bamboo garments maintain their shape and size exceptionally well.

Is bamboo fabric suitable for formal occasions?

Absolutely. High-quality bamboo fabric, particularly the Italian-woven varieties we use at Christian Boehm, has a refined luster and drape that is perfectly appropriate for formal and business settings. Many clients are surprised to learn that their favorite formal shirt is made from bamboo, as the appearance is indistinguishable from premium cotton or silk blends.
